This page should be read before moving onto the “manage files” page as files should really be in folders to make your life easier in terms of finding the file you want later.
Let’s look at the basics, when an operating system (Windows) is installed the hard drive has to be prepared, so I want you to pretend the hard drive is a library and we can put a wall down the centre (a partition) which divides the library into fiction C: drive and non-fiction D: drive. (Not many people will want to go to non-fiction). Now we format each partition, which if you like it to putting shelves up. These can be 4kb shelves NTFS format or 16kb shelves FAT32 format. Now we fill the shelves with books (folders) and the pages are, if you like, files. Now if a book is too big to fit on one shelve it will take two and nothing else will be allowed on that second shelf, so hopefully you’ll see that a little bit of a book extending to the next shelf in NTFS takes up less space in the library than FAT32.
FOLDERS
Click start and you will see some like this:
Yes my documents, my pictures and my music are all folders ready prepared for you.
Now you can create folders nearly anywhere, try this, click a blank part of the screen once with the right mouse button, move the cursor onto new and then left click (once) on
Folder and there you are, a folder called new folder. Now whilst it’s highlighted you can type a name for this new folder, type Junk and then click anywhere else on the screen once. Now let’s junk it, click on the folder once with the left mouse button keep the button held down and drag the folder on top of the recycle bin and release the button.
Well done! You have now learnt how create a folder and delete it using drag and drop.
Now we will create folders inside folders, for example “tax UK” inside the “my documents” folder.
Click on Start once with the left mouse button and click on “my documents”
once with the left mouse button.
Now you can left click on make new folder, rename it “tax UK” before you lose the highlight, you will now have a new folder called ‘tax UK’ and you can copy & paste, drag & drop or just save any files regarding tax in the UK to that folder, which exists inside the ‘my documents’ folder. You can of course rename any folder or file by selecting (left click once) then right click and choose 'rename'.
